OpenID Society | A Chapter of the OpenID Foundation

About the OpenID Society

The OpenID Society was incorporated in the District of Columbia on December 15, 2008 as a not-for-profit corporation (Articles of Incorporation). The Society became a Chapter of the OpenID Foundation on May 28, 2009.

Mission

  1. To support the objectives of the OpenID Foundation, which are to foster and promote the development and adoption of OpenID as a framework for user-centric identity on the Internet.
  2. To support institutions of higher education and professional societies in their use and dissemination of open identity protocols.
  3. To support the OpenID Society Council of Elders.

Bylaws

The Society Bylaws are expected to be completed by the end of 2011 based on the following principles:
  1. The Society makes publicly available all actions of the Society including financial activity, technology developments and policy decisions through its Website.
  2. The Society is a non-profit organization that has published bylaws, standards, and procedures and is governed by an independent board of directors, with specified procedures for selection and tenure of board members such that control does not rest with one individual or group of individuals indefinitely.
  3. The Society Board of Directors approves all expense budgets for the organization and those budgets are part of the organization’s public record published on the Society Website.

Council of Elders

The role of the Council of Elders (Council) is to provide guidance and advice in the deployment of OpenID and the extension of the protocol. The Elders are recognized professionals in areas of scientific research and/or academic achievement. Any Society Member can nominate someone as an Elder by emailing a Letter of Recommendation to Elders@OpenIDsociety.org. Nominees must be approved by all Elders in order to join the Council. The Council must vote on nominations within 3 months of receipt of the Letter of Recommendation. Read the Council Bylaws.
